Hibiscus as a Natural Red Food Colourant for F&B

Hibiscus sabdariffa delivers a deep ruby red from anthocyanins and is the most commercially available natural red colourant for food and beverage applications. THS IMPEX LLP exports dried hibiscus calyces grown in Uttar Pradesh, India under HSN 0603, traceable to GSTIN 36AAXFT6971E1ZF. This article covers what a formulator needs to know before specifying natural red food colourant from hibiscus.

Why hibiscus is the clean-label red

Hibiscus anthocyanins (primarily delphinidin-3-sambubioside) produce a deep ruby red that holds well in acidic beverages such as fruit drinks, herbal teas and sparkling waters. Unlike synthetic red dyes, hibiscus carries a recognisable ingredient name and a tart, cranberry-like flavour that adds value to the product rather than just colour.

pH behaviour and formulation stability

Like all anthocyanins, hibiscus colour is pH-sensitive: it reads deepest red below pH 3 and shifts toward blue-purple above pH 5. Most beverage applications that use hibiscus are acidic by design (fruit teas, lemonades, kombucha), which keeps the colour in its optimal red range. THS IMPEX reports colour value (E1%, 420 nm) on the Certificate of Analysis so a formulator can calibrate dose before finalising a recipe.

Applications across F&B

THS IMPEX hibiscus calyces are used in herbal tea blends, fruit-flavoured beverages, natural food colouring for confectionery and bakery, and wellness drinks. The whole dried calyx infuses directly in hot or cold water; hibiscus powder (also available from THS IMPEX) suits applications where a smooth dispersion is needed.
